How to Apply Iron-On Patches
How to Apply Iron-On Patches (Chenille & Embroidered)
Applying your iron-on patch is quick and easy! Follow these steps for the best, long-lasting results.
What You'll Need
- Household iron (no steam)
- Ironing board or firm, heat-safe surface
- Thin cotton cloth or pressing cloth (recommended)
Instructions
- Preheat your iron to the Cotton setting (approximately 300–350°F / 150–175°C). Turn off the steam.
- Preheat the fabric by ironing the application area for 5–10 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Position the patch adhesive side down where you'd like it placed.
- Cover with a thin cotton cloth or pressing cloth to help protect the patch and fabric.
- Press firmly with the iron for 20–30 seconds without moving the iron back and forth. Apply steady, even pressure.
- Turn the garment inside out (if possible) and press the back of the patch area for another 15–20 seconds.
- Allow the patch to cool completely before checking the edges. If needed, repeat for an additional 10–15 seconds.
Care Instructions
- Wait 24 hours before washing.
- Wash garments inside out on a gentle cycle.
- Air drying is recommended, though low heat tumble drying is acceptable.
- Do not bleach.
- Avoid ironing directly on the patch after application.
Best Fabrics
Iron-on patches work best on:
- Cotton
- Denim
- Canvas
- Polyester blends
- Twill
Not recommended for:
- Nylon
- Waterproof fabrics
- Leather
- Vinyl
- Delicate fabrics
- Fabrics with heavy stretch
For Extra Durability
Although the heat-activated adhesive creates a strong bond, stitching around the edges is recommended for items that will be washed frequently, children's clothing, backpacks, or other heavily used items.
Note: Chenille patches are thicker and fluffier than standard embroidered patches, so they may require slightly more pressure or an additional 10–15 seconds of pressing time to ensure the adhesive fully bonds.
